Police in Ho Chi Minh City arrested a bag-snatching suspect less than three hours after the crime. Vietnamese detectives, the victim was a South Korean tourist.
The robbery happened on the evening of July 14. Lee Jae Young, 43, was walking along Pham Van Buong Street when a man on a motorbike rode up and grabbed his shoulder bag before speeding away.
The stolen bag contained VND 12 million (about US$460) in cash and a mobile phone with important personal data. Local residents helped the victim report the incident to police.
Officers from Tan Hung Ward Police and the city’s Criminal Police Division immediately launched a search.
Within three hours, they arrested 31-year-old Tran Minh Tri from Vinh Long Province. All of the stolen property was recovered and returned to the victim.
During questioning, Tri admitted he committed the robbery because he needed money for personal expenses.
He also told investigators that he deliberately targeted a foreign tourist, believing language barriers would make it more difficult for the victim to report the crime and increase his chances of escaping capture.
