The Ha Tinh provincial people’s court has sentenced Tran Van Son, 27, to life imprisonment for murder after he fatally stabbed a Turkish national outside a shopping center in Ha Tinh city, Vietnam.
Vietnamese detectives, according to the indictment, on July 30, 2023, Son stole two bottles of soft drinks from a shopping center on Ha Huy Tap street.
Security guards discovered the theft and reported him to local police, who took Son to the police station for questioning.
After being released, Son reportedly saw a meat vendor’s stall with three knives and took a 40cm-long butcher knife.
He wrapped the knife in cardboard and returned to the shopping center, intending to confront the security guards.
Finding several guards in the lobby, Son waited near an ATM. At around 1:10pm, he saw Ergül Sinan, a Turkish national born in 1971, leaving the shopping center with two companions.
Son approached Sinan from behind and attacked him with the knife, killing him at the scene.
He then stopped a taxi and asked the driver to take him to the former Ha Tinh City Police headquarters, where he surrendered.
The court subsequently sentenced Son to life imprisonment for murder, Vietnam detective service agency.
